Ending Waste is everyone’s Business

And every second counts…

At THE UPCYCL, we dream of a world where no valuable materials are wasted before they've even had a life.
We’ve created a win-win-win solution where Buyers are purchasing New Waste Materials at a lower price, and Suppliers reduce waste while turning disposal costs into revenue streams.

In just four years, we’ve grown from a passionate idea to a fully operational digital marketplace for New Waste Materials. Through subscriptions and transactions we make industrial waste easily accessible and circulated between manufacturing companies.

With CO2e data provided we can track and document the climate impact for both Suppliers and Buyers.

This is good business – and it has to be – because if you want something to move fast towards a circular future, you have to combine it with good business.

Clearly, purpose and profit can go hand-in-hand

The alarming g reality of the need for a circular future

Despite a growing focus on the circular economy, our actions toward a more sustainable future are still falling short. There’s been a lot of talk – now it’s time to act!

Worldwide, an estimated 3,870,720,000 tons of New Waste Materials are generated every year. Shockingly, 20% of the materials that manufacturing companies purchase end up as waste before they’ve even had a life. We need to work together to make these materials run in circles.

In this race for a circular future, every second counts.

invest in THE UPCYCL

THE UPCYCL creates circular matches between the suppliers of industrial waste streams and the buyers that can utilize them. These matches often cross industries, which is why there’s a need for a digital marketplace to connect these pairings and make waste materials easily accessible—think of it as Tinder between suppliers and buyers of the waste materials or the “Amazon” for waste materials.

Circular matches:

For instance, consider how we matched a transport equipment manufacturer with a furniture design company: steel offcuts from the production of wheelbarrows were transformed into elegant legs for a Danish design classic.

Or how we connected the ventilation industry with the construction sector: sheet metal offcuts were repurposed into the framework for a recycling building station.

Another example is the collaboration between scrap car dealers and interior design projects: unused airbags were upcycled as cushion covers for stylish new cushions.

By investing in THE UPCYCL, you’re supporting a system that not only reduces waste but also sparks innovation and creativity across industries.

Our Journey

2019

Rikke's Story: How It All Started

We began with nothing but common sense and determination.

Rikke Ullersted, CEO and founder of THE UPCYCL, began her career as an industrial designer and co-founded the award-winning design studio, MADE BY MAKERS, alongside Carsten Petersen. They worked with renowned clients like LEGO, Coloplast, and Grundfos. However, Rikke soon began to feel disillusioned by the lack of access to sustainable materials, to use in industrial and high volume production.

During a client project, she repurposed materials from the industrial containers of another client, sparking the idea to merge the use of sustainable materials with the vast streams of industrial waste.

2020

THE UPCYCL is founded

The time was right.

A late night after working on the Jury of the Danish Design Award, Rikke decided to go all in. She locked THE UPCYCL name and bought the domains.

Amid bootstrapping, setting up our first office, and the onset of the global COVID-19 pandemic, a digital and scalable business model began to take shape.

2021

Knocking doors to the industry

Cold canvas and knocking on the doors to the industries.

The furniture industry started to experience a sustainable demand, and we successfully started matching industrial waste streams with the needs of the furniture industry.

2022

Getting our first investment

With the growing demand for sustainable solutions, the need for circularity became undeniable and we really started to drag waste out of the industry dumpsters.

We got our first investment from Accelerace Invest and achieved soft funding, making us move faster.

We also reached a milestone – 100 listed materials ready for upcycling.

2023

Building Tech and onboarding clever Angels

Christian Thisted joined the team as Tech Lead, leading the rebuild of our platform. We onboarded 10 strategically selected business angels.

Rikke was nominated as a “Female founder to watch” and we became semifinalists in the “Green Startup Cup” by Boston Consulting Group and EIFO.

We expanded to 200 listed materials.

2024

Recurring Revenue and Transactions Flowing Through Our B2B Platform

The matching and trading of waste streams have become fully digital, enabling us to deliver climate data as a service. We’ve expanded our capabilities to create real, measurable impact.

Behind the scenes, our team has been the cornerstone of this success. THE UPCYCL has grown even stronger through dedicated teamwork, and 4 more clever Angels onboarded.

Focusing on team culture, we introduced informal sailing trips and a holiday house retreat while beginning to shape a manifesto that defines our ideology, purpose, and shared values.

A team of 7 dedicated individuals, 100 member companies, and over 220 listed materials.

2025

We want to move faster - we invite you to join us

‍We invite our community to invest and push the agenda. We believe that we can run faster together AND do good business.

Climate damage on Mother Earth is of great concern and we need to get our circular system rolled out as fast as possible.

Sale and Scales
This year will be all about getting enormous amounts of waste out of the dumpsters, and into other companies’ supply chain.
We will scale our digital solution and make New Waste the “New Normal”.
We will map the landscape of industrial waste in Eastern Europe, securing strong waste-matches and business among industries.

We aim to reduce 1,500 tons of CO2e and 1,200 tons of waste.

2026

Expanding in Europe and looking towards the U.S.

Scale, logistics and Data service will be the headlines for 2026.

We will expand across borders, especially looking towards Germany, the UK and the Nordics.

We aim to reduce 4,200 tons of CO2e and 3,360 tons of waste.

What our ANGELS say about THE UPCYCL

Maj Grundtvig Theander
You can easily invest with both your heart and your mind at the same time. The world is facing so many challenges that require massive investments and innovative solutions. This is especially true for the circular economy. How do we use existing materials better so that we can conserve the planet's scarce resources? Often, it’s ‘just’ about thinking differently. THE UPCYCL does that. Here, both suppliers and customers can save money while benefiting the environment. It makes sense economically and is sustainable. That’s why I chose to invest in the company.
Marianne Kolenda Kruse
Through its B2B platform, THE UPCYCL creates positive environmental change while maintaining a focus on economic returns. The idea that waste from one company can become a valuable resource elsewhere is helping to shift how we consume today. This approach creates value from both a cultural and economic perspective. My commitment to THE UPCYCL is rooted in this meaningful purpose. The platform is built on a foundation of circular economy principles, sustainability, and a strong entrepreneurial spirit – all essential ingredients, in my opinion, for creating real impact and driving a company that can influence the future agenda and contribute to protecting our planet moving forward.
Margrete Bak
My investment in THE UPCYCL makes sense given my background. I grew up in the 1950s with a father who taught woodworking and a mother who taught handicrafts. We often repaired and reused materials. Later, in my communes and with my own young family, we continued to fix things and buy very little. I never really joined the consumerism trend. Seeing the high resource use in manufacturing today, investing in circularity feels right to me. My personal experiences have now led to a professional decision to support circularity as an investor.
Trine Lyhne Blunck
My investment in THE UPCYCL is made based on the purpose of the company. We live in a world where we are consuming more and more of the planet’s resources each year—so why not use what we already have more efficiently? THE UPCYCL creates win-win situations through its B2B platform, where one company's waste becomes a valuable resource for another. This makes sense from both a sustainability and financial perspective.
Kika Krista Kjærside
My investment in THE UPCYCL is based on a belief that we need to think differently and find new paths and business models to succeed in the green transition. THE UPCYCL model is simple, clear, and obvious – I believe this is crucial for getting more people to commit to a sustainable, circular transition.
Troels Riisbrich Underlien
I invested in THE UPCYCL because I believe in the sustainable change it creates. Real change happens when there is a solid business opportunity, and I see that opportunity in THE UPCYCL's promise to its customers. I don’t believe businesses are ready to finance the necessary sustainable transformation purely for the sake of sustainability itself, and I understand that. I also don't think it's their responsibility to do so. However, the parties involved in transactions through THE UPCYCL's platform achieve both business results and help drive sustainable change. That, to me, is the key to making a real impact.
Ane Stürup
I have become an investor in THE UPCYCL because I want more action and less talk on the path to a sustainable planet. We need to practice—on a very practical level. Moreover, I am increasingly frustrated by the waste of so many fantastic materials that still hold great potential. I think commercially and sustainably in the same breath. For me, it's a passion to unite 'a good idea' with 'a good business.'
Theresa Blegvad
I became an investor in THE UPCYCL because we need to start seeing waste as a resource! Endless overconsumption is neither economically sustainable nor responsible in terms of the planet's limited resources. Circular economy and strong partnerships in value chains are The Future! THE UPCYCL connects companies' value chains, which is common sense and crucial for a sustainable future.

What our members say about THE UPCYCL

Our members are giving New Waste new life across all different kinds of projects.
Sometimes I have an idea about the product, but I don't know yet what it should be made of, and then I actually start the process by scrolling through THE UPCYCL's material bank. And then I get a lot of great ideas for what we could use
Agnieszka Szwarezewska, CEO Squarely Copenhagen
Like almost all other industrial companies, Jevi has experienced massive price increases in raw materials.
However, what is currently an even greater challenge is actually obtaining materials. This, in my opinion, highlights the need for and the benefits of thinking in a circular manner. The alternative to our leftover materials is having to buy new materials, which could have a lead time of 6 to 8 months. Through our membership with THE UPCYCL, we have gained inspiration to formalize our secondary sorting process and also to explore other possibilities within our production
Tommy Christensen, CEO Jevi
We have a mission to reduce the waste percentage in car scrapping. We achieve this by extracting all remaining materials before the car is scrapped. However, for this to be a profitable business for us, it requires that the remaining materials can be sold to customers beyond our own. That’s why our collaboration with THE UPCYCL is incredibly important, as their community allows us to reach customers outside the automotive industry.
Lise Korsgaard, Sustainability Manager, Salling Autogenbrug
Through our membership with THE UPCYCL,we have gained inspiration to formalize our secondary sorting process and also to explore other possibilities within our production.
Sofie Mora Kristensen,
Group Sustainability Manager, Superwood
We have learned so much from driving this process with airbags and circular materials. We now know that it's easier to source materials from a partner who already does some sourcing for us. So when we purchase leftover materials from THE UPCYCL, we know that the first phase of our quality check has already been taken care of. So it's actually something we have learned
Ragna Sara Jònsdòttir,
Founder & creative Director FÒLK Reykjavik
We probably have around 10 bags per day, of fabric scraps, and we have a great need and desire to see if it can be recycled.
It has been wonderful to have a place we could turn to with this challenge and be our spokesperson.
Because our primary function is to serve our customers, which means we neither have the time nor the energy to be proactive in recycling this waste that we have.
Therefore, we think it has been great to collaborate with THE UPCYCL because we know they do their best to find a market for our products
Pia Olsen, Direktør Systuen Pana
When we say that we make the world's best board, we start by buying the best wood we can find.

However, when it goes through the planer, some flaws typically occur, such as fallen knots, resulting in a significant number of boards being rejected, which is far too valuable to simply label as "waste". We look for ways to utilize this waste so that it can be used sensibly.
Ole Dalsgård Nielsen,
Managing Director Superwood
We may have to reject a panel due to a tiny imperfection or some other flaw in an inconvenient spot. As a result, almost a square meter of this material can be used elsewhere. We have been involved for quite a while now, and I find it to be an exciting journey. In our network, the goal is to find these valuable things that don't need to be discarded or recycled because we skip many steps by upcycling the product instead of recycling it. It makes a lot of sense for your CO2 footprint
Steffen Clemmensen, Stoko Plast
The advantage of working with these materials from THE UPCYCL is that we can achieve a consistent product, and we know the exact sourcing of the materials. For example, we can create something like this cutting board, which is made from virgin waste from kitchen countertop manufacturers. So we know the exact journey that the wood has been through, and as a result, we can deliver a product that is suitable for food contact
Emil Maegaard Jørgensen,
Co-Founder Underflod
But the fun process from having a thought and an idea to now having a pretty nice ‘Waste Inn’ sorting facility was a collaboration I entered into with THE UPCYCL. It was like a dating center where I could access some materials and actually design my ‘Waste Inn’ from there. So suddenly, I could have a product in a relatively short time that is made of 80% surplus materials itself, but also contributes to a solution on how to sort waste in sports arenas or larger venues like convention centers. This is actually possible thanks to the matchmaking facilitated by THE UPCYCL.
Sofie Randel,
Founder & CEO Rethink Event
