Football shin guards made from Fiber Discs Waste

Graduate students from Aalborg University have designed a shin guard using NEW WASTE materials from THE UPCYCL - the Fiber Discs. The focus of the project has been to repurpose industrial production waste materials and transform them into a new product.

THE UPCYCL's orange fiber disc is a material that has not yet been given new life, which made it exciting to work with. Through material testing, we concluded that the core properties of the fiber disc is the flexibility, dimensional stability, chemical resistance, as well as heat and water resistance. These core properties led us to use the fiber discs for football shin guards - we call them FiberGuard.

The students not only created a product but also tested its form and comfort in collaboration with a local football team. After five official matches and several training sessions, the players have adopted FiberGuard and replaced their old shin guards.

These core properties led us to use the fiber discs for football shin guards – which we call FiberGuard. FiberGuard features an outer shell made from the fiber disc material and an inner padding composed of EVA foam. FiberGuard has been developed in collaboration with users who provided feedback on size, shape, and comfort.

It is evident that THE UPCYCL's materials are well suited for students to use in a circular projects and to explore the full potential of the materials. This can result in less use of virgin materials, reduced CO2 emissions, and less material waste.
